It's "mandatory" in the Eastern Catholic Church still. This step in the Roman Church--even locally--promises a return to proper identity.

It is a good practice and is an extremely small but ever present reminder that He sacrificed for us.

as a convert I never really understood why the Latin Church stopped the practice. I know what the rationale given was, but I find it very

hard to believe they actually thought it would work out well. Clearly I wasn't living in those times.
