Headcanon that John lied to Liv about not having a knack for seeing the souls to get Liv to cooperate. It doesn't make sense later otherwise, unless he just picked up the ability randomly. He sure as hell sees ghosts in following media. It's strange for them to cut it out in plot, and then just forget about it later.
