I think that's actually a design feature - Plurk is designed for a couple of hundred friends, not for thousands of followers.

So it's more likely to appeal to the average Bebo/Facebook user, rather than the social media cutting edge

I'm not sure it would scale even to hundreds. But we'll see if it gets that far.
