thank you everyone for your thoughts. Maye had inflammatory bowel disease, megaesophagus (rare in cats), and an inexplicable column of fluid in her intestines.

Given her age, asthmatic status, and inability to take food for 5 days, it was clear at the end. We had some good time together on Friday, and I know we made the right choice,

(cozy) Squeaky was the first kitty I had on my own. I cried for days and was a mess for longer. I totally get it. I'm so sorry. :-(

When Apple died, I remember saying to Nik, "it's amazing what a huge space a 4 lb cat can leave in your life." I'm so sorry, it's never ever easy, even when it's right.
