Three times today, I was puttering around in the kitchen, trying to do something nice, and my roommate caught me in the act each time and asked me, "Oh, are you making the potatoes?" "Oh, are you making juice?" "Oh, are you making the freezer pops?" and it just....took all the fun out of it.
If she'd seen it three minutes later and gone, "Oh, you did that!" I would have been all like, "Yes, yes I did!" and been happy. But being watched feels like being judged, and I just can't.
I used to get the same, at least when I was at work. "Oh, you're doing the thing?"... yes. Yes I am. Now go away and let me do the thing and stop standing there watching over me.
