dolph would love zoro
timmtams: oh yeah?? I am curious for your thoughts; I haven't seen Captain Laserhawk yet, but it is on my to-watch list for sure

well first impressions is zoro is a stoic, cool, aloof person and while dolph certainly can project that impression too, he's very much a broken individual

so seeing someone nail it would be something dolph would love to emulate
ohhh, dolph!!

he desperately wants to be aloof and stoic and not care because he gets punished every time he cares
slanndalous was saying something like this too the other night
buddyyyyy

YEAH he has a real rough go dfgdfg
Zoro can be the cool aloof mentor that'll never fuck him over... but that's because he's not actually cool and aloof nyeh hehh

haha
zoro only looks cool and aloof but when you actually get to know him he's just a huge nerd
that's my favorite thing about his introduction tbh lmao like you're led to believe he's this terrifying person and then in 2 minutes you see a little girl sneaking into the enclosure where he's been imprisoned to give him rice balls as thanks for helping her u_u
goodluckmodes: he contains multitudes, definitely. sometimes he is terrifying, but he's also got his humanity, his soft center, and his ridiculous side too

I think it's interesting that, in the manga, one of the first things we learn about him is that he killed some dude's pet dog. which would usually indicate to the reader "oh this is a heartless person", but it's immediately contrasted with his genuine interactions with Rika, a small child
granted, I'm playing from the live action in Duplicity...but I actually think all those elements are still there (despite a lot of the complaints I've read). it's just much more subtle to suit the medium
Zoro is one of the funniest SHs in all versions, IMO, his humor is just very dry and often said with a straight face. so it doesn't always register for people right away
i loved LA zoro lmao, like. he’s different but the core energy is the same imo
AGREED. And the differences make sense within the context of the live action, too. it's basically an AU where Zoro had very few meaningful human connections after Kuina's death, and he became much more stoic as a consequence of hunting ruthless criminals alone for a living
His core, his fundamental truths as a character, are absolutely still there, though
genuinely my only minor quibbles with the LA are that imo they cut too much out of baratie and arlong park

Agreed. At the same time, I think they worked well with the limited number of eps Netflix gave them. And if my main complaint is "needs more" then that's not a terrible thing at all lol
I was actually fine with how Baratie turned out, but it would have been nice to see Arlong Park get more time to breathe in places
the main things i would reinstate personally are ghin in baratie and the part where the villagers knew about nami all along
Ghin was at Baratie, they just removed the conflict between him and Sanji. But ultimately I think he served the same narrative purpose, which was to show us what kind of person Sanji is
true! it just hit me so much harder to have that random act of kindness being the reason everyone survives that arc
I also get why they streamlined Nami's story the way they did, it's much simpler to say they were in the dark than to quickly explain "oh they knew they just PRETENDED to hate her all these years". Plus it paired well with Zoro's changes, so you end up with two foils for Luffy who were genuinely reviled by the people around them,
and I really enjoy parallels like that just in general
i rewatched the arc recently and cried all over again at the part where ghin spares sanji’s life
But I agree, it changes the impact, and I'm glad the original story is how it is
the bit that’s the biggest gutpunch for me in anime arlong park is how nami’s despair point doesn’t even hit when the money is stolen but rather that the villagers have Had Enough and intend to die fighting so she can be free so i was disappointed that changed hahah
but it wasn’t badly done or anything i just didn’t feel as emotional about it as i did in the anime, which is another arc that made me cry lmao

I'm do excited to rp with him~ Hi, thank you for bringing him to the game!
goodluckmodes: I think one benefit of not trying to replicate those sorts of gut-punches in an LA adaptation, is that you don't spoil it for newbies who decide to read the manga or watch the anime for the first time
esp. when you lack the space to give it proper build-up and breathing room
feathersAndWax: Hi hiiiii! thank you for the warm welcome
